The Group
The main activities of the Dissertori group are focused on:
- research in particle physics at the highest energies and luminosities, in particular with the CMS experiment at the LHC collider
- detector research and development, with possible spin-offs in other directions, in particular biomedical imaging
- teaching of physics at ETH Zurich and public outreach
A very important aspect of the CMS-related activities is the very close collaboration with the groups of Prof. Ch. Grab, Prof. A. de Cosa and Prof. R. Wallny. Indeed, within CMS all members of these groups operate as a single team, without any professorial boundaries. This leads to an important enhancement in efficiency, visibility and potential for making leading contributions.
In the area of biomedical imaging (PET developments), very close collaborations exist with the group of Prof. Weber at the University of Zurich, Prof. T. Lomax (Proton Therapy Center at PSI), Prof. J. Prior at the University Hospital Lausanne and the spin-off company Positrigo AG.
Special recognitions
The strong standing of Prof. Dissertori and his group, in particular in the field of high energy particle physics, is exemplified by a very large number of coordination roles, carried by G. Dissertori and members of his group, such as many convenerships of working groups in CMS. In particular, G. Dissertori carried the roles of Deputy Physics Coordinator (2010-2011), Deputy Chairperson of the CMS Collaboration Board (2014-2016) and Deputy Spokesperson (2016-2018) of the CMS experiment.
Further recognitions of Prof. Dissertori’s international reputation:
- Member of the Particle Data Group, as co-author of the QCD review in the bi-annual compendium on particle properties, the most cited resource in the field
- Invitations for the experimental summary talks at some of the main conferences in the field
- Chair person of the International Advisory Committee of CERN’s Future Circular Collider project
- Chair person of the Scientific Committee of the National Laboratory of Frascati, Italy
- Scientific Delegate of Switzerland to the CERN Council
- Editor in Chief of the European Physics Journal C, one of the leading journals in the field
- Elected as Fellow of the American Physical Society
